Pressure Washer Buying Guide: Petrol, Diesel or Electric?

Our pressure washer range spans from a R809 replacement hose to a 2,500L diesel-braked jetting trailer at over R100,000 — so “which pressure washer” really breaks down into three separate decisions: power source, pressure rating, and whether you need a trailer at all.

Petrol, diesel or electric?

Electric units (2.2kW, 220V) are the simplest option where you’ve got reliable power on site — workshop yards, fixed wash bays. No fuel to manage, lower noise, less maintenance.

Petrol units free you from a power point and are common on our mobile trailer models, typically running 186-248 bar. Good middle ground on upfront cost and portability.

Diesel units dominate the higher end of our range — 10hp diesel engines pushing 241 bar, often with electric start. Diesel suits sites already running diesel plant (farms, fleets, construction), and generally handles continuous heavy-duty use better than petrol over a long working day.

Reading the bar rating

Our stock ranges roughly 100-248 bar. As a rule of thumb: 100 bar units suit lighter routine washdown (vehicles, yard equipment); 186 bar covers most general industrial cleaning; 241-248 bar is jetting-grade pressure for stubborn build-up, drain jetting, and heavy equipment. Higher bar isn’t automatically “better” for every job — it’s more aggressive, so match it to what you’re actually cleaning rather than defaulting to the top of the range.

Trailer-mounted vs mobile unit vs trolley

If the washer needs to travel between sites behind a vehicle, our trailer units (500L-2,500L integrated water tanks) mean you’re never dependent on an on-site water source. Smaller jobs are better served by our mobile skid units (1000L) or 210L trolley units, which are easier to manoeuvre around a single yard or workshop without needing to be towed.

Braked vs unbraked trailers

The same logic applies here as with our water and diesel bowsers: unbraked trailers rely on the tow vehicle alone to stop, and are only suited to lighter loaded weights. Once you’re running a 1,500L-2,500L trailer full of water plus the pump unit and chassis, you’re well into braked-trailer territory. Always confirm your tow vehicle’s rated towing limits and local regulations before ordering — see our braked vs unbraked guide for the detail.

Quick reference

Format Typical bar Best for
Electric mobile (2.2kW) ~100 bar Fixed wash bays with grid power
Petrol trailer 186-248 bar Portable general industrial cleaning
Diesel trailer/jetting unit 186-241 bar Heavy-duty, continuous, off-grid sites
210L trolley unit 241 bar Single-yard use, easy manoeuvring
